AbstractThe discrimination of aquatic environments or compartments with different concentrations of chlorophyll-a may be useful for the management of water resources, optimizing eutrophication control. Until recently, available remote sensing systems did not have adequate spectral and radiometric resolution to discriminate diagnostic spectral features from chlorophyll presence in water. More recently, hyperspectral sensors have been developed more responsive to the needs of that application. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present the results of an experiment to evaluate the potential of SpecTIR sensor for the characterization of environments with different concentrations of chlorophyll-a at Ibitinga-SP reservoir. For this we used a spectra library provided by Londe (2008) associated with 11 classes of chlorophyll-a concentration ranging from 7,21 to 67.208,49 μg/L. The spectra of each pixel of SpecTIR image were then classified using the Spectral Angle Mapping technique. In this study we evaluated two spectral intervals, a broader (400 to 890 nm) and another known to contain the main features of absorption and scattering caused by the presence of phytoplanktonic pigments in water (680 to 800 nm) and cells, respectively. The results show that although both spectral ranges tested showing similar results, the region between 680 to 800 nm proves to be more suitable for the detection of large concentrations of chlorophyll and therefore, large phytoplankton biomass. The sensor SpecTIR has good ability to distinguish water masses, since it has a large number of spectral bands in interest ranges for water quality studies.
